Tech Companies Express Concern Over FCC’s Net Neutrality Proposal

(The Hosting News) – More than 100 tech companies, including firms such as Google, Amazon, and Facebook, have expressed their disapproval with the FCC’s new net neutrality proposal.

The plan, proposed by Chairman Tomorrow Wheeler, would allow Internet service provider to charge companies for faster loading speeds, the Wall Street Journal reports.

On Wednesday, tech firms sent a letter to Wheeler claiming that the proposal would pose “a threat to the Internet.”

“Instead of permitting individualized bargaining and discrimination, the Commission’s rules should protect users and Internet companies on both fixed and mobile platforms against blocking, discrimination, and paid prioritization, and should make the market for Internet services more transparent,” states the letter. “The rules should provide certainty to all market participants and keep the costs of regulation low.”

On May 15th, the federal agency will vote on whether to release the proposal to public comment, with a date for a final vote later this year.

One of the five FCC commissioners, Jessica Rosenworcel, stated that the agency should wait a month before voting due to the amount of emails and phone calls from concerned citizens.

“For this reason, I think we should delay our consideration of his rules by a least a month. I believe that rushing headlong into a rule making next week fails to respect the public response to his proposal.”
